Exhibition Review: Monet @ NGV

I’m not a massive fan of impressionist art, but I had heard great things about the Monet exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, so off I headed.

The exhibition space was divided into a number of rooms, the majority of which showcased Monet’s paintings. I found the space to be slightly underwhelming and bland, especially when you could not stand close enough to or far enough away from a work to get a good look due to the company of a few hundred people (who each brought their five incredibly bored toddlers and baby prams). Nevertheless, I did enjoy the exhibition, but this was mainly due to the interactive interpretive material provided in one of the final rooms.

Here I was able to sit in front of a tv size touch screen and trace the life of Monet, clicking on images of his family, gardens and reading about the developments in the world of impressionist art. This room was definitely the most interesting aspect of the exhibition for me.

A final and impressive highlight was the last room which was covered in a giant wraparound-type screen that showed footage of Monet’s gardens and house.
